Protesters rally outside Espada's home

MAMARONECK — Several dozens of protesters
wearing "Don't Vote For Pedro" shirts gathered
Saturday afternoon outside the home of Senate
Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. to mark the one-
year anniversary of his infamous state Senate coup.

A busload of New York voters protested Saturday
afternoon outside the Beechwood Drive home, which
was guarded by three vehicles and five burly Espada
supporters. The senator has been criticized for
living in Mamaroneck instead of the 33rd District
composed of the Bronx that he represents.

What Are They Doing?

So tell us again why we are paying their salaries? New York’s Legislature was supposed to approve a state budget before April 1. Nearly a month later, the leaders still can’t come up with a plan to close a $9.2 billion deficit. Meanwhile, the other 210 senators and Assembly members are mostly sitting on their hands.

No real progress on desperately needed ethics reform. No real progress, period. So tell us again why we bothered electing them?

ALBANY — Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo filed a civil lawsuit against Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. on Tuesday, alleging that Mr. Espada, his family and his political aides had siphoned more than $14 million from a health care nonprofit he founded to pay for meals, vacations and campaign expenses.

“Taxpayer money was given to this not-for-profit to provide health care services to underprivileged patients, but our investigation has found the funds flowed into the pockets of Senator Espada and his supporters,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement.
No hurt in these financial balances

ALBANY -- Efforts to craft a state budget and close a nearly $10 billion budget gap are creeping along so slowly it's painful. And Republicans and Democrats continue to fuss and argue about who is to blame.

But there's one area in which legislators are moving ahead briskly: their own fundraisers.

This year, so far, lawmakers have held 127 fundraisers in Albany, up from 103 last year during the Jan. 1 to March 15 period.
